Why your answer rate dropped: caller-ID spam flags, explained

If answer rate fell off a cliff with the same list and the same caller, the number got flagged. Here is why it happens, how we keep it from happening, and what to ask any vendor about it.

In this guide

How a number gets flagged

Carriers and analytics apps score numbers on call volume, call duration, complaint rate and answer rate. A number that dials 300 times a day with short calls and few answers looks like a robocaller, so it gets a "Spam Likely" label. Once labelled, answer rates drop by half or more, which makes the score worse.

What a managed dialer does about it

Rotation. Calls spread across a pool of local-presence numbers so no single number carries the volume.

Monitoring. Numbers are checked against the major reputation databases; a flagged number is pulled before it drags the campaign.

Remediation and replacement. Flagged numbers are registered and cleared where possible, or retired and replaced.

Pacing. Multi-line dialing tuned so calls connect to a live person fast without the abandoned-call pattern carriers punish.

Why this is a management job, not a setting

Reputation changes weekly. Somebody has to check it, act on it and keep the pool healthy. On our engagements that's included and handled by the dialer admin; on a freelancer engagement it's you. One of our longest-standing clients said the number rotation was the reason they stayed.

What to ask a vendor

How many numbers per caller, how often reputation is checked, what the remediation process is, and what the answer rate was last month on a comparable campaign. A vendor who can't answer the last one isn't tracking it.

Questions people ask

Does ReadyMode handle this?

ReadyMode IQ provides the rotation and tooling; the monitoring and remediation are the work. We're a ReadyMode IQ partner and run that work for every account.

Will a local area code fix it?

It helps answer rate a little; it doesn't prevent flags. Volume and behaviour drive the score.

What answer rate is normal?

On our campaigns about 8 to 11 dials per conversation. A sudden drop of 30% or more with nothing else changed is almost always reputation.
